ABOUT ME

“Once upon a time, there was a boy who enjoyed dancing at weddings, but, having done it for so long, it became unpleasant for him. The boy always wanted to explore an unknown territory of “what is this that people refer to as BANG-RA.” This popular style of music, combining traditional bhangra drumming and rhythms, inspired the boy to join a team. With a lack of dancing friends and no network, the dream seemed to vanish before his eyes. Then, one day, a giant man presented himself to this boy, and changed his life forever. This man offered the boy a chance to venture into a life called Bhangra Empire. With excitement and admiration, the boy said YES. Scared, terrified, and uncertain if he would survive, the boy questioned his passion. Five months later and two competitions down with first place finishes at each, the boy looks back at those weddings and says, “I’m too good for this…”

Hi… My name is Danish Anwar and I am a dancer of Bhangra Empire. My bhangra career began in January of ’09. This form of music and dance has inspired me to be a great dancer, and Empire gives me that opportunity to reach my dream. The first time I witnessed Bhangra Empire was at Rooh Punjabi Di in Davis. I was amazed and awed by their formations, their selection of music, and their high energy.  I never would have imagined that, two years later, I would be dancing for Empire.

I graduated from University of California, Davis, and received a BS in Biological Sciences and Managerial Economics. I was involved very much with South Asian Student Organization and Muslim Student Association in Davis. Outside of Bhangra, I work as an Engineer for ASUS. I am planning on going back to school to get my MBA (iA). I also enjoy watching and playing all sports especially basketball.

What can I say about Empire?  These amazing people have become a second family to me.  Thank you to Empire for changing my life: the wisdom, confidence and heart you have shown has been an inspiration to me. The breadth of the skills and lessons you have taught me will be amplified over my lifetime. Thanks Empire!
