So, we just got an order of Bhangra Empire wristbands. What for? Well, yesterday was our ‘Class Competition’ for the summer session. What is our class competition? Well, the way we structure our classes is, for the first 7 weeks, each class learns a routine. The eighth week, all the classes come together and perform in a friendly competition in front of family and friends. We had 6 classes this session averaging around 20 people each, so the studio was PACKED. We have 4 or 5 people from the team come and judge and choose 1 class as the winner. The winning class this year each got these wristbands. This was the largest session of classes we’ve had so far. We had 2 classes in Dublin, 2 classes in San Jose, 1 class in Fremont, and 1 class in Newark. The teachers (Osman, Puneet, Poonam, Sophia, Shelley, and Bhavi) did an amazing job all session.
Teaching classes really helps put things in perspective sometimes. It is easy to get caught up in the competitive atmosphere with the team. Practices can get pretty intense and serious at times, not to mention stressful. Classes are the complete opposite. People come out to have fun and learn. If somebody doesn’t learn a step right away, it isn’t a big deal, as long as they are trying and improving. Also, I’m sure other teachers can relate to this, there is a sense of satisfaction that comes with teaching people who have never danced before. Watching these people progress over an 8 week session, or multiple sessions, is definitely a high point. It is different from say, winning a competition, but it is still fulfilling.
On that note, Fall classes start September 7th in Dublin, San Jose, and Newark. If you are interested, you can get more information here: Bhangra Classes. We are only having 3 classes this session, so be sure to sign up soon if interested. Also, to get an idea of how classes are run, check out a quick highlight video of a free class we held in Fremont:
