What’s My Favorite Empire Performance?

Another topic request from one of our fans in India. Thanks to everybody who has requested topics so far. If you want to request a topic, you can do so here and I will try to get to it as soon as possible.

As choreographer of Bhangra Empire, what is your favorite performance by the team?

My answer to this might surprise some of you. The obvious guesses would have to be Bruin Bhangra 2009, Elite 8 Bhangra 2010, or Jashan Bhangra 2011. These are 3 of our most popular videos on YouTube. However, for my favorite, I am going to have to go with Bruin Bhangra 2008. Unfortunately, Gabroo TV was not there that year, so the video quality isn’t the best. I think Jashan comes as a close second for me currently, but that might be just because it is our latest competition video. So why Bruin Bhangra 2008?

Well, there are many reasons. From strictly a performance standpoint, I think this was one of our cleanest performances and had a lot of entertaining aspects. Yes, there were a few mistakes here and there, (I probably notice a lot more than everybody else) but from an overall execution and style standpoints, I felt like all 12 dancers were on the same page. The energy was through the roof and the crowd was beyond amazing (I miss the days when Long Beach Terrace would easily sell out.) We introduced a lot of new concepts in that routine that really hadn’t been done before. It was also Bhangra Empire’s first Bruin Bhangra, which made it special for the whole team.

We placed 2nd at this competition. Da Real Punjabiz from UC San Diego placed first. You can check out their performance on YouTube here (definitely a cool intro.) To me, the results were not that important. We practiced hard and put on a solid performance. The crowd reaction was enough for us. If you really twisted my arm, and asked who I think was better, that year, between us and DRP, I would say us. But then again, I could be a little (sarcasm) biased. I think it really came down to personal preference of the judges and could have gone either way. Bruin Bhangra is held annually on Memorial Day Weekend in Southern California. You can find out more information about them at their website. Anyways, here is the video of my our performance at Bruin Bhangra 2008:

I had another topic request asking what my favorite non-Empire bhangra performance was. I need some time to think about that, so I’ll save that for a future topic. What’s your favorite Bhangra Empire performance?
